Day 6
Day 6 we looped the Snaefellsnes peninsula. This is the next best part of Iceland after the southern bits we’d come from (and fell in love with the year before). Snaefellsnes is certainly nice but if I were choosing one over the other, go south! Snaefellsnes does add some solitude or at least smaller crowds to the sites which was nice. The biggest issue we had this day was there was fog all morning along the south coast making most of those sites unphotogenic (but still impressive!).
We went on an amazing half black, half tan beach. We went into an amazing slot canyon. We had the best fish and chips I’ve EVER had at a food truck at Arnarstapi arch. From there we headed to Saxholar crater which is a volcano you can climb up and look into the (dormant) crater. This was well worth it and the rocks are amazing the entire way up and around the climb.
After saxholar we mate a pit stop at a small waterfall on the side of the road and then headed up to Kirkjufellsfoss. Kirkjufellsfoss is a fun waterfall with an amazing shark fin mountain as it’s backdrop (called Kirkjufell). Kirkjufellsfoss is another massively photographed set of falls (understandably with that backdrop!). What I hadn’t realized before getting there is that there are two sets of falls here. You see a lot of pictures with the upper set with the bridge where the lower set just looks like rapids. You’ll also see a lot with the lower falls and I just wondered how the upper fall’s bridge were hidden… Turns out there are 2 sets!
From Kirkjufellsfoss we headed to Husafell for the night. This is one of the most popular camp sites in Iceland and I can see why, it’s GREAT and has a pool (and hotel) AT the campsite. We headed off to the pool as soon as we arrive. It was a glorious pool for hot tubbing but they only had 1 slide so the kids were slightly bummed (they’re alwas happy to be swimming). The issue was I hadn’t planned for the fact it was Friday night when we were there and the middle of summer… So HALF of Iceland was there as well!!! We drove around for a solid 45~60 minutes trying to find a place to camp! We finally found a nicely secluded spot and enjoy a great last sleep in the camper!
