Day 3
Day 3 we were up and off early. We stopped at Systrastapi on the way out of town as it’s just off the rotary on route 1 (head north for a minute or two and you’ll see it on your left). From there we were off to Skaftafell national park.
Here we hiked into Svartifoss (the waterfall that got us to Iceland in the first place) and then added a hike up over to the overlook over Skaftafellsjökull (the glacier). What an amazing but WINDY view! The hike down from there was an amazing trail through the woods. We crossed a few small streams and some rolled over a cliff into water “falls” but it was so windy they were getting blown back up and it felt like rain!
From there we also drove into the lagoon at the foot of Svínafellsjökull (the neighboring glacier) which was interesting but I’d pick one or the other -vs- both. It was so windy in the dirty parking lot we couldn’t really take pictures and I was worried about getting dust/dirt in my eyes.
From there we headed off to Jökulsárlón (the iceberg lagoon), a favorite from last year. The kids loved checking out the beach with the icebergs on it. We also swung by the lagoon side where there was another bridge and groom!
From Jökulsárlón we headed off to Hofn for the night. Hofn’s pool was amazing! Massive waterslides and great pools. The kids had a blast and the adults had another relaxing soak! From there it was off to the very same camp site as last year which was great again.
