Mount Washington open’s it’s auto road for sunrises 3 times a year. I learned that last week, and this Sunday just happened to be one of the days… So David Howland and I hopped in the MINI late Saturday night and headed up to see what sort of fun we could have. We got there around 2:30am and were the second car in line. We tried to take a quick nap but had no such luck as cars kept arriving about 5 minutes appart. By 3:45am they’d collected their “toll” from us and we were on our way up the mountain. It’s an 8 mile drive that takes you up 4k vertical feet with a 12% grade average. We were in the clouds for a little over a mile which made driving especially interesting at night. David said at one point: “DO NOT look out this window!”… The clouds didn’t really give us a great sunrise but we had a blast and got to hike down around the alpine gardens with a lot less effort than normal. On the way home we hit Sabbaday falls to see what it looks like when it’s not burried by snow. A stop well worth the time.
Enjoy!
