I’ve been excited about micro four thirds cameras since olympus made their teaser announcement last year. The EP-1 didn’t excite me much as it’s slow to AF and not a great looking camera to me (I’m not big into retro anything). I’ve also been on the fence because this is moving to an even smaller sensor than APS-c which means worse noise and more DOF, but it’s clearly a giant step ahead of a P&S… But what is this replacing? If it’s replacing a P&S it kills them on IQ, but if it’s replacing a DSLR you’re losing ISOs and DR for sure. For me it’s a bit of both as I want a good P&S that takes pictures how and when I want. The s90 has been OK but it’s a bit slow shot to shot. But I also have times when I want to bring a “real” camera with me but don’t have the space, but a P&S would suffer due to low light. That’s where the GF1 comes into play. So we decided to sell the XSi which was my backup DSLR and Nikki’s camera, and give the GF1 a shot. If we don’t like it, we’ll switch back to a T1i as it adds video over the XSi (another reason we wanted to try the GF1). I’ll try to do a proper writeup on this in the next few weeks. For now here’s a gallery of sample images (with some s90 images of similar subjects):
